Life in your 20s feels like an unending maze of realizations, challenges, and expectations. For some, these realizations come early. I was one of those. At 15, I began to understand the importance of financial independence and the role money plays in shaping our lives. But growing up as a shy, introverted individual, the journey was far from easy.
Time Doesn’t Stop—Learn Before It’s Too Late
One thing life teaches you, sometimes painfully, is that time doesn’t stop for anyone. I still remember being in 10th grade, feeling like adulthood was light years away. And yet, in what feels like the blink of an eye, I’ve graduated, and life is speeding forward. This realization hits hard: if you don’t learn the essential lessons early on, time will not wait for you to catch up. The sooner you start understanding life’s responsibilities and expectations, the better equipped you’ll be to navigate them.
The Weight of Shyness and Societal Challenges
Shyness can often feel like a burden. Speaking up in public, asserting yourself, or even responding to confrontations can seem like climbing a mountain. If you’ve been shy since childhood, you might resonate with the feeling of being underestimated or overlooked. Yet, these challenges shape you, pushing you to grow stronger.
The Burden of Expectations
As you cross the threshold of 18 or 20, the weight of expectations grows heavier. Your family, who nurtured you until now, starts hoping you’ll stand on your own feet. They’ve done their part, and it feels like it’s your turn to give back. Alongside these familial expectations, you have your own dreams—ones you crafted as a child.
I remember wanting to own a luxurious car, build a grand house, and become an officer. But as reality set in, the dream list started shrinking. Some dreams faded away, replaced by the practicalities of life. You realize that not all aspirations align with reality.
Unrealistic Expectations: A Trap We Set for Ourselves
We often fall into the trap of setting unrealistic expectations for ourselves. For instance, if you’re earning ₹10,000 a month, expecting to jump to ₹1 lakh within a month is impractical. Similarly, aiming to crack a highly competitive exam like MPSC without the necessary preparation can set you up for disappointment.
The key is to pause and ask yourself, “Why am I doing this? Is it necessary? Does it align with my abilities and goals?” This introspection helps you filter out unnecessary burdens and focus on what truly matters.
Balancing Expectations: A Practical Approach
- Family Expectations: Most families have simple hopes. They want their children to be independent and capable of supporting the family when needed. By focusing on your personal growth and career, you naturally fulfill these expectations.
- Societal Expectations: You don’t need to be a soldier at the border to contribute to society. Every honest effort you make in your job or field of interest indirectly benefits the community. Doing your work with dedication and integrity is a meaningful way to give back.
- Personal Expectations: It’s vital to align your goals with your reality. Unrealistic goals lead to frustration, while achievable ones motivate you to do better. Focus on what brings you joy and adds value to your life.
Embracing Failures and Staying Grounded
Failure is inevitable, and it’s okay. Often, I still find myself questioning my choices, feeling lost in the chaos of life. But that’s part of being human. Emotions fluctuate, and thoughts evolve. What matters is how you respond to these moments. Choose clarity over confusion, and action over inaction.
Ask Yourself the Right Questions
- Is what I’m doing meaningful for me?
- Does it bring value to my life or to others?
- Am I genuinely enjoying the process?
If the answers resonate with you, keep going. Success may not come immediately, but clarity and commitment will fuel your journey.
A Reminder: Time Keeps Moving
Time is relentless—it never stops, never slows down. Whether you’re ready or not, it keeps moving forward. This is why learning and acting early is crucial. Every day you delay understanding your responsibilities, setting realistic goals, or pursuing your passion is a day you won’t get back. The earlier you align your efforts with your purpose, the more fulfilling your life will be.
A Message for You
This blog is not just a reflection of my journey but also a reminder that life doesn’t have to be a race to meet everyone’s expectations. Focus on your growth, do what feels right for you, and remember—it’s okay to take it one step at a time.
